About Us

Madeline and Marvin Barkin (1981)

In 1963 Marvin Barkin began working in Metro Detroit’s scrap metal industry. He started small using one dump truck to service six customers while his wife Madeline was in charge of the paperwork. On special occasions, Marvin would bring along his children while swapping out containers and checking in on accounts.

When Madeline and Marvin’s three sons became adults they followed in their dad’s footsteps. In the late 70’s Steven (Steve) and Bruce Barkin, the youngest sons, helped Marvin expand the business through securing new accounts and venturing into larger-scale operations.

In the early 2000’s, following the deaths of Marvin and Madeline, the business grew under Steve’s ongoing devotion and drive. He valued hard work, integrity, and remaining loyal to his customers - many of whom became lifelong friends.

Upon Steve’s sudden passing in June of 2021 the third generation of Barkins took on the family business. Steven Barkin Scrap has always been more than a company, it is a piece of who we are.

Steve’s business motto was to “work hard and provide the best service possible.” At Steven Barkin Scrap we continue to uphold this mission honoring the legacy of Marvin, Madeline, Bruce, and Steve.
